Things To Know Before Visiting

The South Whitehaven Beach Lookout offers visitors panoramic views of the Whitsunday Islands, including the full 7-kilometre stretch of Whitehaven Beach.

Key Information for Visitors:

• Access: The lookout is accessible via a 1-kilometer walking track from the southern end of Whitehaven Beach. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for visitors with a low to medium fitness level.

• Amenities: South Whitehaven Beach has picnic tables, shaded areas, and composting toilets, making it convenient for day visitors.

• Environmental Considerations: To preserve the pristine environment, visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles, including taking all rubbish with them and sticking to designated paths to protect native flora and fauna.

Not your typical Whitsundays day boat. Most tours operate on open rafts or rigid inflatables with bench seating, no shade, and no or small, limited toilets. Super Flyer is a fully equipped 80-passenger catamaran built for comfort at speed.

Our 80-passenger catamaran was purpose-built for comfort at speed. Inside, you will find a spacious air-conditioned cabin with group seating at tables for between 4 and 6 guests. Outside, two sun lounge decks; the top deck is adults only. There’s a licensed bar, coffee machine and two large bathrooms on board.

Super Flyer cruises at 24 knots with advanced navigation and radar for safe, smooth passage through the Whitsunday Islands. Our unlimited on-demand water taxi runs between the catamaran and Whitehaven Beach all day.

10 Facts About Whitehaven Beach

1. Unlike most beaches in the world Whitehaven is made of 98% pure silica sand, which gives the beach a stunning white colour.

2. The whiteness of the silica sand makes the sand cool to touch even on the hottest days, walking barefoot is a breeze.

3. The rocks around the beach contain no silica, meaning all this sand was washed here by tides thousands of years ago.

4. All of the plants and animals are the same as you find on the mainland because the Islands haven’t been separated from the mainland for long enough for any kind of evolutionary changes to happen

5. The Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven tend to have less dense growth and dryer conditions than those surrounding Airlie Beach – like Conway National Park- because they don’t see as much rainfall as the mainland.

6. There are 10 dedicated campsites at the south end of Whitehaven Beach that take a maximum of 36 guests and 6 long drop toilets.

7. In 2019, the new South Whitehaven Beach lookout opened at the south end of the beach. Unlike the famous northern lookout, the views from the south are stunning no matter what the tide is doing, and you can see over the eastern side of the Whitsunday passage

8. Whitehaven Beach stretches over 7km with the inlet at one end and a rocky outcrop  just before a passage at the south end

9. On the far northern end lays the famous inlet with swirling sands pictured at low tide. Across the inlet from Whitehaven Beach is Bettys Beach. Whilst technically not Whitehaven, it holds the exact same silica sand you can see the entire beach with a Whitehaven Beach Map
