ZigZag Whitsundays are pleased to announce our accreditation, through Ecotourism Australia, of our Super Flyer “Whitehaven Beach All Day” and “Whitehaven Beach Plus Snorkel” day tickets. We have been certified at Advanced Ecotourism, the highest level Ecotourism Australia awards.
Whilst we have always championed environmentally sustainable tourism, having this accreditation means that our guests can be assured that our policies and practices have been assessed to the highest standards by an independent organisation.
Ecotourism Australia is a non-government, not for profit organisation that promotes and supports the tourism industry through building capacity and actively promoting sustainable tourism operations and systems. Accreditation by this organisation demonstrates a commitment to high quality experiences, grounded by strong environmental values, a commitment to nature conservation and investment in local culture and communities.
ZigZag Whitsundays have always had sustainable tourism at the forefront of our practices, through waste reduction, recycling, interpretation and education, emissions reduction and involvement in conservation projects such as Boats4Coral and the Eye on the Reef program. We also commit to not selling merchandise derived from rare and threatened species, and we advise customers not to purchase these items from other sources. We are GBRMPA Stewards of the Reef at Chalkies Bay, our main snorkelling destination, and promote low impact visitation to all of our destinations. We ask all guests to “take nothing but pictures, and leave nothing but footprints”.
Wildlife Interactions
Wildlife interactions can be the highlight of many guests’ experiences. To ensure the safety of our guests and the continued health and comfort of our wildlife, there are a few best practices to follow:
- Keep a safe and respectful distance
- Do not surround or corral any wildlife
- Do not feed any wildlife, or leave any food scraps lying around (we have a bin available on the beach for any rubbish)
- Minimise any noise around wildlife
- Do not attempt to touch any wildlife
Snorkelling Etiquette
To ensure the health and wellbeing of our beautiful environment, as well as your own safety, there are a few rules to follow when snorkelling. Our lovely tour guides will explain these to you on the day also:
- Don’t touch the coral
- Don’t touch anything, it could be deadly
- Keep a respectful distance away from wildlife, don’t chase, harass or corral them
- Don’t feed the fish, or any other wildlife
- Use a reef-safe sunscreen
- Be mindful of other snorkellers around you
- Be mindful of the extra length your fins give you and avoid kicking people, coral or animals
- Don’t stand unless you’re on sand, otherwise you might inadvertently be standing on coral
